The total count of the Omicron variant of coronavirus has reached 781 in India. This highly transmissible variant of concern was first detected in South Africa in November. It has now spread to 21 states in the country.
Delhi has the highest Omicron cases at 238 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 167 cases.
India reported 9,195 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours; this is 44 per cent higher than Tuesday’s 6,358 cases.
The government has been speeding up the vaccination drive and cautioning people against lowering the guard.
Over 143 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India.
The recovery rate currently stands at 98.40 per cent; this remains the highest since March 2020.
Active coronavirus cases account for less than 1 per cent of the total cases. This is currently at 0.22 per cent which is the lowest since March 2020.
The active Covid-19 caseload stands at 77,002. The Omicron variant is behind the rapid virus spikes in several countries.
As per the earlier data, there is a reduced risk of hospitalisation for Omicron as compared to the Delta variant.
Therefore, more data is needed to understand the Omicron variant’s severity in terms of clinical markers, including the use of oxygen, mechanical ventilation and death.
