'One Nation, One Election' Bill Introduced in Lok Sabha; Opposition Slams BJP's Move
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, which sharply got backlash from the opposition. Heads of Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), and Trinamool Congress (TMC) said this bill is impractical and against the spirit of the Constitution.
Opposition's Strong Reactions
Opposition came from Congress MP Manish Tewari and SP MP Dharmendra Yadav, who said that BJP follows double standards. "The BJP, which could not conduct simultaneous elections in 8 states, now talks about elections across the country at once," he said.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee also opposed the bill, saying it goes against the core principles of the Constitution.
Criticism of Jairam Ramesh
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that 'One Nation, One Election' is a stepping stone for the new Constitution. Addressing ANI, he quipped, "The actual agenda of RSS and PM Modi is bringing a new Constitution, not amending it."
Nadda's Counterattack
In the Rajya Sabha, BJP President JP Nadda countered opposition claims, invoking Dr. BR Ambedkar’s stance against religion-based reservations. Nadda accused the opposition of distorting the Constitution for political appeasement and demanded a debate on the reservation issue, which the opposition rejected.
