‘One Nation, One Election’: Kiren Rijiju Slams Congress for Opposing the Proposal

‘One Nation, One Election’: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on the ongoing debate over the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal stated that it is important for the country. Speaking in Delhi, Rijiju said,

He further added that after independence, the nation followed this system and termed Congress's claims of it being unconstitutional as baseless.

'One Nation, One Election'

The 'One Nation, One Election' proposal is a move to align the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections to cut down election expenses and maintain governance stability.

It was a norm in India after independence but gradually changed due to political and constitutional developments.

Opposition and Kiren Rijiju's Response

The Congress has strongly opposed the proposal and termed it "unconstitutional". It has questioned its feasibility. In response to this, Kiren Rijiju said:

The system was there in the time of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru after independence.
He said that Congress must see history before leveling allegations against the proposal.

Why 'One Nation, One Election' Matters

The central government thinks that this reform will bring several benefits:
Cost Savings: The reduction of repeated election costs.
Stable Governance: Governments can focus on development rather than a continuous cycle of elections.
Efficient Administration: No disruption caused by frequent polls.

Kiren Rijiju's statements highlight the government's intent to implement 'One Nation, One Election.' Opposition parties, especially Congress, continue to oppose it, but Rijiju's statement brings to the fore the historical significance and advantages of the system. The proposal is still a hot topic of discussion in India among the public and the political class.
