'One Nation, One Election' Needs Discussion, Bill Should Be Sent to JPC: Supriya Sule

One Nation, One Election: NCP leader and Member of Parliament, Supriya Sule recently said the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal needs to be discussed threadbare. She also added that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) should be formed to check the implications of the bill.

What is 'One Nation, One Election'?

The concept of 'One Nation, One Election' aims to synchronize the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections across the country. The idea is to streamline the electoral process, reduce costs, and ensure political stability.

Supriya Sule's Concerns

Supriya Sule stressed that there should be a broader discussion on the proposal:

She pointed out that the proposal will have a huge impact on democracy and governance.
The sending of the bill to a JPC will let all the stakeholders evaluate it in and out.
The important change must be debated with all parties and experts to make sure that such a decision is balanced, says Sule.

Why a Bill to a JPC?

A Joint Parliamentary Committee is formed to scrutinise important bills in detail. The advantages are:

Rigorous scrutiny of how the bill will affect the elections and governance.
Including the view of experts in solving probable issues
Transparency process prior to any constitutional amendments.

Response to the Proposal

Whereas the government perceives 'One Nation, One Election' as a reformation toward streamlining the election procedure, the opposition parties along with Supriya Sule believe that thorough discussion on the issue will ensure democracy.
