Pensioners’ Forum Slams Ban on Branded Medicines, Anand Awasthi Warns Legal Action

The Pensioners’ Forum, representing nearly 9.5 million beneficiaries across India, has voiced strong opposition to the government’s directive to stop the issuance of branded medicines to pensioners. The forum has termed the move “dangerous” for senior citizens suffering from chronic illnesses.
Consultations with Associations Underway
The Pensioners’ Forum has announced it will first consult all affiliated pensioner associations across the country before sending a formal letter to the department secretary, urging the government to revoke the decision in the interest of public health.
According to data shared by the forum:
-
7% of pensioners are above 70 years
-
5% are above 80 years
-
2% are aged 85 or above
Most of these elderly beneficiaries are dependent on branded medications for managing chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, cardiac issues, and cancer.
If Justice Is Denied, Legal Route is Next: Anand Awasthi
Speaking on behalf of the forum, Anand Awasthi, General Secretary of Pensioners’ Forum, stated:
“We are standing up not just for the current generation, but for the next as well. If the government doesn’t deliver justice, we will have no option but to take this matter to the courts of law.”
He emphasized that this issue goes beyond just medication—it concerns the dignity, health, and safety of India’s senior citizens.
