Sonam Wangchuk, the Ladakh social reformist whose life story inspired the Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots,’ has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safety and security of Ladakh, as studies show that nearly two-thirds of the Union Territory’s glaciers are vanishing.
Sonam Wangchuk told on Sunday that if the irresponsibility continues and Ladakh is not protected from industries, the glaciers here will become extinct, causing great problems due to water scarcity in India and its neighbouring countries.
“If precautions are not taken, the industries, tourism, and trade will continue to develop in Ladakh and would eventually kill it.
Recent studies from Kashmir University and other research groups have determined that if glaciers in Leh-Ladakh are not adequately cared for, they will be reduced by approximately two-thirds. According to a study conducted by Kashmir University, glaciers surrounded by roadways and human activity are melting at a substantially faster rate,” Wangchuk stated.
“Global warming due to America and Europe alone is not responsible for this climate change, but the local pollutants and emissions are equally responsible for this. “There should be little human activity in locations like Ladakh so that the glaciers can remain intact for the residents here and across the country,” he stated.
The engineer-turned-education reformer further emphasised the importance of adopting sustainable development while pleading with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to guarantee that Ladakh and other Himalayan regions are protected from “industrial exploitation”. He continued, “It will assist preserve people’s lives and jobs.” keeping them protected for future generations so that nature can continue to give humanity its resources and services.
“I am pleading with PM Modi to protect Ladakh and other Himalayan regions from this industrial exploitation because it will have an effect and protect the lives and employment of the populace.
He emphasised the need to adopt a sustainable way of life in which resources are used to achieve development goals while being preserved for future generations so that nature can continue to provide its resources and services to humans. “I do, however, think that in addition to the government, the people should also be equally concerned about climate change and look after the measures to mitigate it,” he said.
He further urged the kids to refrain from wasting food and clothing because doing so indirectly damages the environment.
Wangchuk ‘urgently’ pleaded with the people of the nation and the world to support the protection of the “environmentally sensitive” region of Ladakh in a 13-minute video that he posted on his YouTube page.
In accordance with the sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution, he has also emphasised to PM Modi the need to step in and protect the ecology.
“Sonam Wangchuk in Ladakh (in the Indian Himalayas) is pleading with the people of India and the rest of the globe to assist in preserving this ecologically fragile area. In accordance with the sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution, he implores the Prime Minister of India to step in and protect this delicate environment”.
