Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made a powerful debut in the Lok Sabha on Friday, delivering a stirring speech that has garnered widespread attention. The newly elected Member of Parliament from Wayanad made an impression not only on her colleagues but also on her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who went on record to say that her maiden address was better than his own when he first entered Parliament in 2004. "It was a wonderful speech—better than my maiden speech, let's put it like that," Rahul remarked outside the Lok Sabha.
Priyanka Gandhi reiterated national integration, strength of women, and the essence of protecting the Constitution in her speech. According to her, the Constitution was India's "Suraksha Kavach" or protective shield. She also began by paying tributes to the soldiers who died while saving India in the infamous 2001 Parliament attack at the hands of terrorists.
Priyanka's speech also criticized the government over several key issues with special emphasis on the caste census. The BJP-led NDA government, she said, has shown lack of enthusiasm in conducting the census and instead trivialized the issue for political benefit. "The people of this country are demanding a caste census," declared Priyanka, calling upon the government to redress social inequalities through this crucial process.
Priyanka Gandhi further highlighted the diluting of the reservation system, owing to the government's privatization and lateral entry into government positions. She also was critical on the issue of electoral transparency; she suggested a reinstatement of ballot-based elections in order to obtain accountability from the political process.
Her speech was echoed by the marginalized communities, mainly focusing on the plight of the victims of violence in Sambhal, who, through education, dreamed of a better future. Priyanka's debut marked her as a strong and determined voice in the opposition, poised to lead the charge for social justice and constitutional integrity.
