Richa Chadha Galwan Tweet Row: ‘Fukrey’ star apologises after backlash

Published Date:

‘Fukrey’ star Richa Chadha, who sparked a controversy over her tweet on Galwan and was accused of ‘mocking’ the Indian Army, issued an apology on Thursday. Posting an apology on Twitter, the Bollywood actor said she didn’t intend to hurt the sentiments of the Indian Army.

“Even though it can never be my intention in the least, if the 3 words which are being dragged into a controversy have offended or hurt anyone, I apologise and also say that it would sadden me if even unintentionally my words have triggered this feeling in my brothers in the Fauj (army) of which my own Nanaji has been an illustrious part,” she wrote.

She also wrote about the contribution of her family towards the country’s armed forces, saying her maternal grandfather, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, took a bullet in his leg during the India-China War of 1962, and her maternal uncle served as a paratrooper.

“It’s in my blood… A whole family is affected when a son is martyred or even injured while saving the nation which is made up of people like us and I personally know how it feels. It is an emotive issue for me,” she added.

Richa Chadha Galwan Tweet Row

Richa Chadha had caused a storm over her tweet in which she reacted to Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement that the Indian Army is ready to execute orders like taking back the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. ‘Galwan says hi,’ Richa Chadha had said in a now-deleted tweet.

BJP reacts

BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa took it to Twitter to strongly criticize the actor and wrote: “Disgraceful tweet. Should be withdrawn at the earliest. Insulting our armed forces is not justified.”

Netizens slam Richa Chadha

Many social media users slammed Richa Chadha and accused her of ‘mocking’ the Indian Army and belittling the sacrifice made by the jawans in the 2020 Galwan clash between India and China.

Rajnath Singh’s statement

Lt General Upendra Dwivedi made the statement on Tuesday in the context of defence minister Rajnath Singh’s earlier remark that India’s aim is to reclaim the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

“We have just begun our journey of development in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. We will achieve our goal when we reach Gilgit and Baltistan,” the defence minister said.

What Northern Army Commander had said?

Commenting on Rajnath Singh’s statement, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi had said, “As far as the Indian Army is concerned, it will carry out any order given by the Government of India. Whenever such orders are given, we will always be ready for it,” he said.

“The military is always ready to make sure that ceasefire understanding is never broken as it is in the interest of both nations, but if broken at any time, we will give them a befitting reply,” the Lt Gen said.
