RSS Welcomes Back Ram Madhav After Six-Year Stint in BJP: A Strategic Shift in Leadership

In a significant move, Ram Madhav, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has returned to his roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) after a six-year tenure in the BJP. The announcement was made during the ongoing meeting of the RSS's highest decision-making body, the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, in Bengaluru.

Madhav's transition back to the RSS marks the end of a pivotal chapter that began in 2014 when Amit Shah became the BJP's national president. During Shah's tenure, Madhav was brought into the BJP and appointed as the national general secretary, where he played a crucial role in expanding the party's influence, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeastern states.

Key Role in Jammu and Kashmir

Ram Madhav's role in Jammu and Kashmir was especially noteworthy. He was instrumental in the BJP forming a coalition government with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014. Despite the divergent views between the two parties on issues such as Article 370, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), and the future of refugees from Pakistan, Madhav successfully negotiated the terms that led to the formation of the government under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Under this coalition, the BJP secured the Deputy Chief Minister's position for the first time in the state's history. After Sayeed's death in January 2016, Madhav navigated the complex political landscape, leading to the appointment of Mehbooba Mufti as the Chief Minister in April 2016. However, this government was short-lived, and by June 2018, following the BJP's withdrawal of support, Mehbooba Mufti had to step down.

Architect of BJP's Northeast Success

Following his success in Jammu and Kashmir, Amit Shah entrusted Madhav with the responsibility of strengthening the BJP's presence in the Northeastern states. Madhav played a key role in dismantling Tarun Gogoi's stronghold in Assam, not only establishing the BJP's government there for the first time but also bringing key leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma from the Congress into the BJP's fold.

Today, the BJP has Chief Ministers in both Assam and Manipur, with allied governments in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Madhav's strategic acumen also led to the BJP's historic victory in Tripura, where the party uprooted the long-standing Communist government.

Modernizing the RSS

Ram Madhav is also credited with modernizing the RSS, including updating its 100-year-old dress code. He advocated for the organization to embrace modernity while staying true to its core values, particularly to attract the new generation that is deeply influenced by television and the internet. Despite initial resistance from senior RSS leaders, Madhav was instrumental in integrating information technology into the organization, leading to initiatives such as RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s official Twitter account.

Return to the RSS Executive

During the Saturday meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, Dattatreya Hosabale was elected as the Sarkaryawah (General Secretary) of the RSS, succeeding Bhaiyyaji Joshi, who had held the position for four consecutive terms. Ram Madhav has been inducted into the RSS's national executive body, marking his return to the organization's core leadership.

The new executive team includes five Sah-Sarkaryawahs (Joint General Secretaries): Dr. Krishna Gopal, Mukund CR, Dr. Manmohan Vaidya, Ram Datt, and Arun Kumar. While Dr. Krishna Gopal, Mukund, and Manmohan Vaidya continue in their previous roles, Arun Kumar and Ram Datt have been newly appointed, with Arun Kumar previously serving as the head of the Jammu and Kashmir Study Center, the RSS's think tank.

Additionally, Ramlal has been assigned the role of Akhil Bharatiya Sampark Pramukh (National Contact Head). He previously served as the BJP's National Organization Secretary for 13 years before being replaced by BL Santosh when JP Nadda became the party president in 2020. Alok has been named the Akhil Bharatiya Sah Prachar Pramukh (National Joint Publicity Head), and Sunil Ambedkar has been appointed the Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh (National Publicity Head).

This strategic reshuffling underscores the RSS's continued influence on the BJP's organizational and political strategies, particularly as India heads towards crucial upcoming elections.
