Sambhal Violence: As an important development, Samajwadi Party declared that financial help shall be given to the kin of the martyrs and those who got killed during the violence a few days ago in Uttar Pradesh. Party President and former UP Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav has declared compensation worth ₹5 lakh for every victim family. SP leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Ruchi Veera expressed the party's condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that the compensation will be provided to the victims' families as soon as possible.
The incident took place on November 24, 2024, when violence erupted during a mosque survey in Sambhal. In the chaos that followed, five people lost their lives, and several others, including Deputy SP, were injured. The violence heightened tensions in the area, with law enforcement struggling to restore peace. Meanwhile, the political environment surrounding the incident has been highly charged, with parties blaming each other for the unrest.
SP's Claim for More Compensation
The Samajwadi Party has already declared an immediate compensation of ₹5 lakh for each of the victims, but has also sought that the state government of Uttar Pradesh pay an additional ₹1 crore to each of the families of the dead. SP leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, who spoke of the severity of the situation and called upon the government to increase its support.
Police Deployment at SP Leaders' Homes
Amid tensions rising in Sambhal, the situation has taken on a political colour. Deployment of police at the residences of top Samajwadi Party leaders has created an eyebrow. On Saturday morning, police were present outside the residences of leader of opposition in the Upper House of the UP State Legislature, Mata Prasad Pandey, and his counterpart in the Legislative Council, Lal Bihari Yadav, anticipating the visit of a 15-member SP delegation to Sambhal. The delegation will meet the victims' relatives and collect more information related to the situation. The deployment of police forces ahead of their visit has sparked controversy, with allegations that the government is attempting to suppress the political response to the violence.
Political Tensions Escalate
The violence in Sambhal has triggered political debate, with accusations and counter-accusations on both sides. Samajwadi Party is not silent on this incident; it has been vociferous in its attack on the Uttar Pradesh government over the handling of law and order. Akhilesh Yadav has stated that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated under the present BJP-led administration, and the party has demanded that the central and state governments do more to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens.
