The Supreme Court has put on hold Allahabad High Court’s order for lockdown in five cities of UP. There will be no lockdown in these five cities for now.

Uttar Pradesh however, has been asked to report to the apex court within a week the measures it has taken to take to tackle the Covid surge.

The Allahabad High Court Monday evening had ordered a lockdown in Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Kanpur and Gorakhpur till April 26.

The UP government had refused to enforce it and approached the apex court this morning. The UP government argues that a blanket lockdown in five cities would create immense administrative difficulties.

The state government says a complete lockdown is not needed. As per the Union Health Ministry, India recorded 2,59,170 new Covid-19 cases and
1,761 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The total case tally in India now stands at 1,53,21,089. At present, there are 20,31,977 active cases. And as many as 12,71,29,113 people have been vaccinated so far.
