The central government on May 21, 2021, asked micro-blogging site Twitter to eliminate the “Manipulated Media” tag from the tweets related to the toolkit, sources familiar with the development in the IT Ministry said.

The toolkit was allegedly created by Congress to defame the government over the current COVID-19 crisis.

According to the sources, the government objected to the move taken by the micro-blogging site to unilaterally designate tweets of BJP leaders as “manipulated.”

“This action not only dilutes the credibility of Twitter but also puts a question mark on the status of the Twitter as an intermediary,” the sources said.

The objection from the government comes hours after a letter to suspend the Twitter accounts BJP leaders for allegedly spreading misinformation and unrest in the society was sent by Congress to the micro-blogging site.

BJP leaders including party chief JP Nadda, Sambit Patra, and Union Minister Smriti Irani had posted a toolkit with some texts to attack Congress over controversial content in the alleged toolkit.
