Tamilnadu rains: A red alert has been sounded in Chennai and three other adjoining districts after heavy rains.
The incessant rains have led to waterlogging in several areas also. So far, three people died in rain-related electrocutions in Tamil Nadu Thursday.
A red alert is in place in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, and Chengalepattu. It was issued after heavy to extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours.
Schools, colleges and non-essential government offices in these districts will be closed on Friday.
Up to 20 cm of rains have flooded Chennai after a cyclonic circulation along the coasts triggered heavy rainfall.
Moreover, the traffic congestion after heavy rains caused hardship for commuters.
The Chennai metro rail also had to extend services by one hour on Thursday to help stranded commuters.
Four subways in Chennai city have been shut. As per the IMD, there is a forecast of moderate rainfall on Friday.
Isolated heavy to very rainfall activity is likely to continue over north coastal Tamil Nadu; the adjoining areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh re also likely to receive rainfall during the next three days and decrease thereafter, as per the IMD.
