Heavy rains inundated Tamilnadu’s capital Chennai and parts of its suburban areas on Saturday.
The fresh spell has led to waterlogging and the concerned authorities have sounded a preliminary flood alert.
This comes as two of the major city reservoirs–Chembarambakkam and Puzhal reservoirs are set to be opened to release excess rainwater to prevent further flooding of the area.
These also serve as important sources of drinking water for Chennai.
Moreover, the state water resources authorities have advised district collectors of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur to evacuate people living in low-lying areas and settle them in safer locations.
Heavy rains in Chennai
Chennai and several other suburbs in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts have been experiencing intermittent showers leading to inundation.
The Northeast monsoon has also been active over Tamil Nadu for the last fortnight.
As per the government, the state has received 41 per cent excess rainfall during this period. There is a forecast for low pressure in the Bay of Bengal on November 9.
The heavy rains have broken records making it the heaviest 24-hour rainfall since the 2015 floods in Chennai.
But the Chennai Metro Rail services are operating without any disruptions. Trains are available every 10 minutes.
