Terror Attack in Jammu & Kashmir: A terror attack in Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir, killed two soldiers and two civilians after terrorists ambushed army trucks. This is the latest in a series of attacks following J&K's elections, raising serious security concerns.
Terror Attack in Jammu & Kashmir: In a tragic incident on Thursday, 24 October 2024, two soldiers and two civilian porters were killed in a terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Baramulla district. The ambush occurred when terrorists opened fire on army trucks transporting personnel of the Rashtriya Rifles unit and civilian porters towards the Nagin post in the Afrawat range, about 6km from Gulmarg, a popular tourist hub.
The attack happened close to Botapathri. It is a very remote area. There was a brief firefight between the terrorists and Indian Army, and the two soldiers and two porters were injured critically. They later died from the injuries. Another soldier and civilian porter is reported to be in critical condition.
The attack is the latest in a string of terror strikes in Jammu & Kashmir, after the region had its first-ever assembly elections since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Security officials have flagged up the growing frequency of these attacks, which have refueled fears within a region that has seen scattered gunfights across the entire year.
The Indian Army's Chinar Corps has confirmed the firefight and the evacuation of the injured personnel for medical treatment in a statement. However, it later confirmed the death of the soldiers and civilian porters. Their identities have not been disclosed yet.
This terror strike occurred after seven civilians were killed in a deadly attack on the construction site in Ganderbal. On October 18, another victim, who was a migrant worker from Bihar, was gunned down by suspected terrorists at Shopian.
Political leaders have strongly condemned the attack. Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Ombar Abdullah described it as 'a matter of grave concern' and termed this attack as 'barbaric.' "This recent spate of attacks in Kashmir is a matter of serious concern. I condemn this attack in the strongest terms & pray for the swift recovery of the injured," he said.
Former chief minister and PDP chief, Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the attack and expressed shock and sadness over the loss of life. "This is a senseless act and it is high time people belonging to the security forces understand that Kashmir has become a battle ground," said the People's Conference head Sajad Lone.
This has, of course, brought to an end the fragile peace established during the recent cycle of polling in Jammu & Kashmir and raised new questions about the security situation in the Union Territory.
In the present scenario, not even intensification of operations by security forces can do without acknowledging the need for more robust measures against the increasingly perceived threat in the region.
