How Gangsters in Tihar Jail Continue to Orchestrate Crime: Nangloi Case Exposes Dark Secrets

New Delhi (AP) – Despite being locked behind the high-security walls of Tihar Jail, Delhi’s most notorious gangsters continue to run criminal operations with ease. Recent investigations into a shooting incident in Nangloi have once again revealed how criminals within the jail use smuggled mobile phones to organize violent attacks and maintain control over their criminal empires.

Tihar, one of India’s most secure prisons, houses several high-profile mafia figures and gang leaders. Yet, even from behind bars, their illicit activities have not slowed down. The recent firing outside a sweets shop in Delhi’s Nangloi has shed light on how deeply connected some of these crimes are to inmates still operating from within the prison.

The Nangloi Shooting Incident

In a shocking event, two gunmen opened fire outside Roshan Halwai, a sweets shop in Nangloi. According to DCP Pratiksha Godara of Delhi Police’s Special Cell, the shooting was linked to criminal instructions sent from Tihar Jail. The Special Cell arrested two suspects, Hariom and Jatin, who were allegedly responsible for firing four rounds at the shop. Both men were armed with semi-automatic pistols, one of which was recovered at the time of arrest. A locally made firearm and a motorcycle used in the crime were also seized.

The gunmen had been sent to threaten the shop owner on behalf of a larger criminal network, which police traced back to the infamous gang leaders locked up in Tihar Jail.

Tihar's Mobile Phone Nexus

This is not the first time that gangsters in Tihar Jail have been found running criminal operations using smuggled mobile phones. The prison has witnessed several such incidents in the past, with notorious criminals orchestrating murders, extortion, and even planning large-scale fraud schemes from within the facility. One of the most infamous cases involved a ₹200 crore scam, also conducted using mobile phones smuggled into the jail.

Even after repeated crackdowns and enhanced security measures, the flow of contraband mobile phones into Tihar has not been completely curtailed. In the Nadir Shah murder case, mastermind Hashim Baba used a mobile phone to plan the assassination while behind bars. In the Nangloi shooting case, the gunmen received their orders in the same manner.

Deepak Boxer and the Gogi Gang

The investigation into the Nangloi shooting also uncovered the involvement of gangsters linked to the infamous Gogi gang, currently headed by Deepak Boxer, a criminal brought back to India from abroad last year. Despite the deaths of gang leaders Jitender Gogi and Fajja in police encounters, their criminal network remains active, with Deepak Boxer at the helm.

One of the shooters in the Nangloi case, Ankesh, has been imprisoned in Tihar alongside Deepak Boxer for a significant period. Police reports suggest that the weapons used in the Nangloi shooting were procured from Sonipat, Haryana. An unidentified individual delivered the firearms to the shooters, continuing a pattern of outside gang members facilitating crimes for their jailed leaders.

Evidence gathered by the police indicates that notes and threats left at crime scenes are still marked with the names of deceased gang leaders, reinforcing their influence on the streets even after their deaths. In the Nangloi case, a note left behind included the names of both Jitender Gogi and Fajja, along with their photographs.

Rising Crime from Within Tihar

Tihar Jail has become a hotbed of criminal activity, despite ongoing efforts by authorities to crack down on the smuggling of phones and other contraband. Last year, gangster Tillu Tajpuriya was killed in a gang war inside the prison, and earlier, Prince Tebatiya was also murdered behind bars.

While the Special Cell has managed to solve the Nangloi case, other violent incidents, such as the Naraina and Mahipalpur shootings, remain unsolved, with the gunmen still at large. The connection between these crimes and Tihar Jail highlights the continuing challenge of controlling organized crime even within one of the most secure prisons in the country.

Ongoing Investigations

The Delhi Police are intensifying efforts to crack down on the mobile phone network inside Tihar and bring the perpetrators to justice. However, the persistence of such incidents suggests a larger systemic issue that needs to be addressed. With gangsters continuing to run their operations from behind bars, the nexus between prison inmates and outside criminals remains a pressing concern for law enforcement in the capital.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to dismantle these criminal networks and prevent further incidents. But for now, the criminal underworld in Delhi appears to be thriving even from the confines of Tihar Jail, underscoring the serious challenge of prison reform and security.
