Tiruvannamalai Landslide: NDRF Takes Charge of Rescue Efforts for Seven Trapped Because of Cyclone Fengal
In a tragic incident on Sunday, a landslide hit VOC Nagar in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, trapping seven people under boulders. The landslide was caused by the continuous rain because of Cyclone Fengal. The NDRF personnel were sent to the area immediately to undertake rescue operations there, working day and night to rescue those trapped.
The trapped victims include Rajkumar, his wife Meena, their two children, and three children from Meena's brother's family. The landslide happened at around 4:30 PM on Sunday, and rescuers are still hopeful that all seven victims are alive, despite the difficult circumstances. PWD Minister E V Velu confirmed that experts from IIT Madras and Yercaud are supporting the rescue operation. Large boulders continued to pose new challenges before the rescue team. "We are trying our best to rescue them," said Minister Velu.
The other landslide was reported at 500 meters from the original spot. In this, nobody was trapped. However, rescue operations are still hampered by the large boulders present, and the experts from IIT Madras are examining the soil texture for proper evaluation. Besides, there is also the specialized equipment and man-power available from Yercaud who are trying to break the rocks and clear the boulder blockage of the trapped area.
The heavy rainfall from Cyclone Fengal has caused widespread disruption in Tamil Nadu, particularly in areas like Tiruvannamalai. The region's residents were evacuated to safety, with many taken to nearby government schools for temporary shelter. The ongoing operation aims to rescue the trapped family members as soon as the area is secured.
The residents of Tiruvannamalai, in addition to the local administration, are optimistic that with the collective efforts of NDRF, IIT Madras, and Yercaud experts, rescue will soon be successful. The authorities are on high alert as heavy rains continue; they are monitoring other vulnerable areas.
