Triple Murder Case: Court Hands Down Death Sentence to Man Who Survived Suicide Attempt
A Hooghly district court in West Bengal sentenced to death a 42-year-old private tutor named Promathes Ghoshal, who brutally killed his parents and sister. This crime happened on November 8, 2021, at DhaniaKhali village within the Chinsura subdivision. After murdering the parents and sister, Promathes attempted suicide by slashing his wrists and remained alive. He was taken into custody after his alleged murder attempt.
Accused: Promathes Ghoshal, mathematics and science tutor, used to live with his father Ashim (68), mother Subhra (60), and his married sister Pallavi Chatterjee (38). He was the bread earner of the family.
The Day of the Incident
On 8 November 2021, one of Promathes's students kept knocking on his door for a scheduled tuition session.
Promathes, drenched in blood, opened the door and collapsed.
The student alerted the Hooghly Police, who found the bodies of his parents and sister inside the house.
Promathes had attempted suicide by cutting his wrist after attacking his family members on the head and neck.
Motive: Dispute Over Money
During the police interrogation, Promathes allegedly claimed that he was troubled by the persistent demands of his family for money. He had seen a considerable decline in his earnings during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he was unemployed without a fixed job. According to locals, though, Promathes earned sufficient amounts from teaching to maintain his family.
Court Proceedings and Judgment
Promathes continued pleading his innocence to the jury at the trial in Chinsura Court (District Court, Hooghly). However, Judge Sanjay Kumar Sharma found the murder to be of an exceptional brutality and termed the crime as "rarest of the rare." Therefore, Promathes was condemned to death.
