The government offered farmers to gradually end the Minimum Support Price and introduced three new farm laws to increase the farmers’ income. However, this has triggered nationwide protests against the government. The farmers think that these new farm laws will leave them at the mercy of big corporations.

The government today said that the MSP regime had changed significantly to ensure at least 1.5 times the production cost.

“The government is committed to the welfare of farmers,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

To boost value addition in agriculture and allied products and their exports, “the scope of ‘Operation Green Scheme’ that is presently applicable to tomatoes, onions, and potatoes, will be enlarged to include 22 perishable products”, the minister said.
