In a rare cross-border wedding, the son of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator from Uttar Pradesh married a Pakistani woman through an online nikah ceremony. Mohammad Abbas Haider, the elder son of BJP leader Tahseen Shahid, tied the knot with Andleep Zahra, a resident of Lahore, after political tensions between India and Pakistan prevented Haider from obtaining a visa to travel to Pakistan.

The wedding ceremony, which took place on Friday night, was conducted virtually. While Haider’s family gathered at an imambara in Uttar Pradesh, the bride’s family participated in the ceremony from Lahore. The couple exchanged vows online, with religious leaders from both sides overseeing the nikah.

Shia religious leader Maulana Mahfoozul Hasan Khan explained that an online nikah is permissible under Islamic law when both sides have religious leaders present, and the bride’s consent is communicated.

The situation was further complicated when the bride’s mother, Rana Yasmin Zaidi, fell ill and was admitted to the ICU in Pakistan. This prompted both families to opt for the virtual wedding.
