Varanasi Temple Controversy: 14 Sai Baba Statues Removed Amid Claims of Religious Identity – What's Behind the Removal?

In Varanasi, the removal of statues of Sai Baba from various temples has sparked a growing controversy. So far, 14 temples, including the prominent Bada Ganesh Temple, have seen their Sai Baba statues taken down. This action is being led by Ajay Sharma of the Sanatan Rakshak Sena.

Origin of the Controversy

Hindu organizations have raised allegations that Sai Baba was Muslim and has no connection to Sanatan Dharma. As a result, they are insisting that his statues be removed from temples. The organizations clarified that while they do not oppose the worship of Sai Baba, they will not allow his statues to be installed in temples.

Supreme Court Directive

Deepak Yadav, speaking with ABP News, mentioned that the decision to remove the statues was in line with a Supreme Court directive stating that Sai Baba should be referred to as Chand Baba. Following discussions on Sunday, the statues were removed from the temples. Yadav argued that objections should have been raised at the time the statues were installed, rather than afterward.

Respect for Sai Baba Worship

Yadav also emphasized that those who wish to worship Sai Baba can establish separate temples for him, stating, “This should not be a point of contention for anyone.” He affirmed that Hinduism is an inclusive faith and acknowledged the pilgrimage to Shirdi as perfectly acceptable.

Role of the Administration

Another individual pointed out that there was no administrative representative present when the statues were removed. This campaign is being conducted under the direction of the Shankaracharya. The individual remarked that there is no disrespect toward Sai Baba, but the statues should have a distinct place.

Future Actions

Ajay Sharma noted that statues of Sai Baba have now been removed from 14 temples, and further removals are planned. He mentioned that the statue in the Bada Ganesh Temple complex was established in 2013 and that the temple had ceased to circumambulate the statue for the past six years.

As the situation unfolds, the debate surrounding the presence of Sai Baba's statues in Hindu temples continues to evoke strong emotions and differing opinions among various communities in Varanasi.
