Weather News: Heavy Rains to hit Tamil Nadu and Kerala till October 26

This year, sporadic rains have been hitting parts of southern India since the beginning of October. The rains became aggressive last week, especially in Kerala, where more than 42 were killed due to landslides, flash floods and other rain-related incidents.

Due to the wetter-than-usual conditions, the southern states of India witnessed above-normal rainfall in October this year. Kerala received 484 mm of rain in the first 21 days of October, while Karnataka registered 154.4 mm and Tamil Nadu 159.4 mm.

Well, after a brief break, the southern peninsula will witness fresh downpours again starting from October 22 till October 26.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a cyclonic circulation over and in the neighbourhood of the Comorin area. Furthermore , a trough extends from this cyclonic circulation to the east-central Arabian Sea off the coast of Karnataka.

Together these weather systems are likely to result in widespread to widespread downpour over southern India. Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal will experience heavy rains from October 22-26.

In some places there can even be thunderstorms and lightning, as well as strong gusty winds at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.

Weather News: IMD issues yellow alert

IMD has issued yellow watch over the south interior and coastal parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Over Kochi, Bengaluru and Chennai, skies are likely to be generally or partly cloudy with rain or thundershowers during this forecast period.
