The Delhi government presented a Rs 78,800-crore budget today, with a focus on infrastructure, education, and health. The event, which was supposed to take place on Tuesday, was postponed due to a spat between the Centre and the AAP administration.
Below are the top ten announcements from the Delhi Budget:
- The Aam Aadmi Party administration has earmarked Rs 19,466 crore for road improvement in order to create a “clean, attractive, and contemporary” Delhi. In the next ten years, over 1,400 kilometres of Delhi roadways would be improved under this plan.
- The government has set aside Rs 2,034 crore for different infrastructure projects in 2023-24.
- Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot stated that 26 new flyovers would be built in the near future. Ten of the 26 projects are under construction, while proposals for 11 have been submitted for approval.
- In addition, the AAP administration intends to build three world-class inter-state bus terminals and purchase 1,600 new electric buses. The transportation industry has been given Rs 9,333 crores.
- Mr Gahlot stated that special attention would be paid to cleaning the Yamuna River and the three rubbish mounds in the national capital region.
- He detailed a 6-point action plan to clean up the Yamuna in the budget. The minister stated that the three landfills in Delhi will be emptied within two years. Local governments would receive Rs 8,241 crore in financial support for this in the fiscal year 2023-24.
- The Delhi budget has set aside Rs 9,742 crore for healthcare. Mr Gahlot stated that nine new government hospitals are currently under construction, with four of them set to open by the end of the year.
- The Delhi government’s Mohalla clinics will now provide 450 free exams. Before, this figure was 250. In addition, the Delhi government plans to open additional Mohalla clinics at metro stations.
- The government has allocated Rs 16,500 crore for education, an increase of Rs 200 crore over previous year.
- Mr Gahlot stated in his address that 350 Delhi government schools will receive 20 laptops each, while all teachers, principals, and vice-principals will receive tablets.
