Who Are the Baiga Tribe? Special Guests of President Murmu on Republic Day 2025

The nation is gearing up for the grand Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2025, at Delhi’s Kartavya Path. This year, President Droupadi Murmu has extended a special invitation to Baiga families from Chhattisgarh’s Kawardha district as her distinguished guests for the occasion. These families will not only witness the celebrations but also dine with the President, making the event even more special.
Who Are the Baiga Tribe?
The Baiga tribes are considered one of India's vulnerable tribal groups and mainly inhabit the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. They are mostly found in Mandla, Dindori, and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh and Kawardha and Bilaspur districts of Chhattisgarh. The community is still facing tough challenges because they lack all fundamental resources, but they are not giving up their lifestyle.
Baiga Community Overjoyed by Invitation
The invitation from the Rashtrapati Bhavan has brought immense pride and happiness to the Baiga families and the larger tribal community. The event highlights President Murmu's commitment to honoring India's tribal heritage, as she herself comes from a tribal background.
Preserving Baiga Culture
In museums like the Tribal Museum at Bhopal, one finds miniatures of traditional homes of Baiga tribes, which depict their distinctive lifestyle. An invitation to the Republic Day celebrations does not stop at acknowledging their past but provides them with an opportunity to celebrate a diversified Indian cultural heritage.
