Yogi Government Issues New Guidelines for Police Encounters in Uttar Pradesh
The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has issued new guidelines to increase transparency and accountability in police encounters across the state. The guidelines, released by the state’s Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, include mandatory videography of the encounter site and independent investigation by officers from another police station. These new measures aim to address growing concerns and criticism surrounding police actions in encounters.
One of the key instructions is the immediate notification to the family of the deceased after the incident, ensuring a more transparent process. The guidelines also require forensic teams to photograph the scene, reconstruct the event, and review all evidence thoroughly. Additionally, weapons used in the encounter must undergo ballistic testing, and the handwash of injured criminals must be collected for investigation.
In light of recent concerns, particularly after a controversial encounter in September, these 16-point guidelines are meant to ensure proper handling of such cases. The Yogi government emphasized that all procedures must follow the directives of the Supreme Court and the National Human Rights Commission to avoid any uncomfortable situations.
