Controversial Speaker Zakir Naik to Tour Pakistan Amid Ongoing Legal Issues

Zakir Naik, the controversial Islamic public speaker, is confirmed to visit Pakistan at the invitation of the Government of Pakistan, as announced on his official social media account. His trip will cover major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, with scheduled dates as follows:

  • Karachi: October 5-6
  • Lahore: October 12-13
  • Islamabad: October 19-20

Naik had previously expressed a desire to visit Pakistan during a podcast with a Pakistani YouTuber, mentioning that he planned to visit in 2020 but was unable to do so due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the podcast, he elaborated on his connection to Pakistan, noting that it would be easier for him to go there since people were familiar with him. He also cited a principle of Shariat, explaining that one should tolerate a small loss to avoid a larger loss.

Legal Troubles in India

While Dr. Naik prepares for his visit, he faces significant legal issues back home in India. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has been investigating foreign funding linked to Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF). Reports suggest that the Enforcement Directorate has referred findings related to the IRF to the police for further investigation.

The Indian government recently banned the IRF, declaring it a terrorist organization under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for five years. Naik, currently abroad, has publicly stated his intent to pursue all legal avenues to have the ban lifted, asserting that the judiciary will ultimately thwart the Modi government’s plans against him.

In addition to these challenges, Naik has been booked alongside unnamed IRF officials under Section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds and performing acts prejudicial to maintaining communal harmony.

Who is Zakir Naik?

Zakir Abdul Karim Naik, born on October 18, 1965, is an Indian Islamic public speaker known for his focus on comparative religion. His controversial views and speeches have drawn both followers and critics, making him a polarizing figure in religious discussions.

As Dr. Naik embarks on this highly anticipated visit to Pakistan, the contrasting backdrop of his legal troubles in India raises questions about the implications of his public engagements and the response from both nations.
