The first case of Zika virus has been detected in Kerala. A 24-year-old pregnant woman has been diagnosed with this mosquito-transmitted disease, Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed Thursday.
There are 13 other suspected cases of Zika virus from Thiruvananthapuram. The government was also awaiting confirmation from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) at Pune.
Of the 19 samples sent from Thiruvananthapuram, 13 health workers, including doctors, are suspected to be positive for Zika, the minister added.
The woman hails from Parassalai. She is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The woman from Kerala had also delivered the baby on July 7.
The tests at the hospital confirmed that she was positive for Zika virus. After the confirmation, her samples were sent to NIV, Pune.
Moreover, the symptoms of Zika virus are similar to dengue like fever, skin rashes and joint pain.
