As per the Hindu scriptures, Basant Panchami falls on Panchami of Magh month Shukla Paksha. For this year 2021, it falls on 16 February. Among Hindus, it is widely believed that on this day Goddess Durga gave birth to Goddess Saraswati.
Also goddess Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, art and music.
The yellow colour finds its association with Basant day. Basant Panchami marks the harvest time of mustard crops. These have yellow blooms, which is Goddess Saraswati’s favourite colour too.
Furthermore, it marks the start of spring season. During spring new leaves, flowers and buds start blooming on trees and plants.
People wear yellow clothes on Basant Panchami. Another reason is that the sun is Uttarayan and its yellow rays symbolize that everyone should become serious and sharp like the sun.
On this day Goddess Saraswati is decorated with yellow clothes and ornaments. People worship the goddess this day.
