Chhath Puja is one of the significant festivals in Hindu culture, celebrated six days after Diwali. This year, Chhath Puja will begin on November 17, 2023, and conclude on November 20. During this festival, devotees worship the Sun God and Goddess Chhathi Maiya. A special offering made after Chhath Puja is Thekua, a traditional sweet snack. If you want to make Thekua for this year's celebration, follow this simple recipe to create tasty and crispy treats.

Ingredients Needed to Make Thekua

  • 500 grams of whole wheat flour (coarse)
  • 250 grams of jaggery
  • 2 tablespoons of grated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds
  • 4-5 crushed green cardamoms
  • Ghee (clarified butter) as needed

Steps to Prepare Thekua

  1. Start by taking a bowl of water and adding jaggery to it. Let it sit for about one hour to allow the jaggery to dissolve completely. If the jaggery does not dissolve fully after this time, heat it on the stove while stirring until it mixes well with the water.

  2. In another bowl, sift the whole wheat flour. Next, add the grated coconut, two tablespoons of ghee, and fennel seeds to the flour. Mix all these ingredients thoroughly.

  3. After mixing, take the jaggery water and gradually add it to the flour mixture, kneading the dough. Ensure that the dough remains firm and not too soft.

  4. Once the dough is ready, divide it into equal portions and shape them into small balls.

  5. Take one ball and press it between your palms to flatten it into the shape of Thekua. Repeat this process for all the dough balls, placing the shaped Thekua on a plate.

  6. Heat ghee in a deep frying pan over medium heat. When the ghee is hot and fully melted, add the Thekua according to the capacity of your pan. Deep fry them until they turn a rich golden brown on both sides.

  7. Once fried, remove the Thekua from the pan and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

  8. Your Thekua is now ready to be offered as prasad during Chhath Puja. Share them with family and friends to celebrate this beautiful festival.
