Gen Z’s Casual Language Shakes Up Workplaces, Jobs on the Line

New Delhi, India — In the modern workplace, Generation Z employees are facing challenges not only for their work performance but also for their casual language and informal dress code. Many companies are reluctant to hire Gen Z employees due to their relaxed communication style, and some are even letting them go. A recent study highlights that this generational gap in workplace behavior is causing friction between young employees and their more traditional superiors.

Take the case of Anna, who, after graduating at the top of her class, was hired by a prestigious hedge fund in London. As the youngest employee in her team, she was eager to learn and was positively received by her colleagues. However, her boss soon commented on her informal language, which, according to him, was undermining her credibility. Despite performing well, Anna was fired just four months into the job, with her manager citing a lack of professionalism. Words like “totally” and “like” were flagged as issues by her supervisor, who felt Anna didn't fit the image of a “smart” employee that the firm required.

Anna’s experience is not unique. One Gen Z employee was also reprimanded after thanking his boss with a casual “Thanks, man,” which didn’t sit well with his supervisor. Experts believe that older generations often view Gen Z as less serious and underprepared for the workforce. This perception has led to a reluctance to embrace the newer, more casual ways of communication that Gen Z employees favor.

Workplace Language Shift

Research shows that over the past five years, workplace communication has become increasingly casual, with 70% of employees noticing a shift in language and formality. A study by Barclays LifeSkills surveyed over 2,000 employees, with 71% attributing this shift to the influence of Gen Z. Many have noticed a change in email communication, where phrases like “Yours truly” and “Yours sincerely” are becoming less common and are expected to fade out in the coming decade.

Why Is Gen Z Changing Workplace Culture?

Experts suggest that the rise of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic blurred the lines between personal and professional lives, leading to a more relaxed work environment. Christopher G. Myers, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, notes that younger employees don’t want to maintain a work persona that feels fake. They prefer authenticity in their professional interactions, valuing personal identity over corporate conformity.

Michelle Ahrnehrich, director of the communication program at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, explains that Gen Z was raised with the belief that being oneself is key. However, this clashes with the rigid corporate norms that still exist in many workplaces. As a result, Gen Z often finds itself at odds with traditional expectations of professionalism.

Will Gen Z Define the Future of Work?

Studies indicate that Gen Z is not only pushing for a more flexible work culture and higher salaries, but also influencing how people communicate in professional settings. This generation's approach to work is reshaping language and behavior, and employers are having to adapt. As more companies begin to understand and embrace these changes, experts believe that the workplace will continue to evolve, becoming less formal and more inclusive of diverse communication styles.

However, the transition isn’t without its bumps. Gen Z’s casual approach has led to clashes in the workplace, particularly when it comes to perceived professionalism. Whether companies will continue to resist or begin to embrace this shift remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Gen Z is making its mark on the workplace, and the future of work will look very different as a result.
