Good Friday is commemorated every year on the Friday that falls before Easter. It is observed to remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. This year, Good Friday falls on April 2, 2021. This day is observed right after Maundy Thursday, which marks the end of the Lenten season.
Accounts in the Gospels talk about how royal soldiers, on this day, under the leadership of Christ’s disciple Judas Iscariot, arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus is believed to have carried his cross to the site of execution called the “place of skull” or Golgotha.Put to death by the Romans on the Hill of Calvary, it is said that Jesus’ crucifixion took place between AD 30 and AD 33.
Observed by Christians all over the world, Good Friday is considered holy as it is believed that on this day, out of his love for people, Jesus sacrificed his life to atone the sins of mankind. As a result of his sacrificial death, humanity was purged of their sin and their sinful nature. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

The day associated with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is called ‘Good Friday’ despite the sadness that overcomes his followers every year. The name stands on the belief that Christ’s death was not an ordinary occurrence and brought salvation to mankind. Some people also believe that it was originally called ‘God’s Friday’ and was morphed over the years.
Christians were dark colours on Good Friday and attend church services from noon to 3 o’clock; the Three hour agony. Many Christians also fast on this day. In some places around the world, like the Philippines, Italy and Spain, processions are carried out, commemorating the death of Jesus.
However, in light of the ongoing pandemic, many followers are choosing to attend online ceremonies to commemorate. Furthermore, all are encouraged to strictly follow all safety protocols and procedures.
