Who is Frank Kameny?
The 32-year-old Frank Kameny was denied federal employment for being gay in 1957. After his dismissal from the position of an astronomer in the US army, he became the first gay rights activist to file an appeal in the US Supreme Court.
He had also challenged the American Psychiatric Association’s classification of homosexuality as a ‘mental disorder’ in the early 1970s.
Although his appeal to the apex court was denied. But from that point proved to be a a big turn for his struggle to fight against the system and discrimination that denied equal opportunities to homosexuals.
He was born in 1925 in Queens, New York. Frank Kameny had graduated from Harvard University with both a master’s degree and a doctorate in astronomy in 1956.
But then in 1975 there came a a historic verdict. Lifting of the ban on hiring LGBTQ employees in the Civil Service Commission. And this can said to be a direct result of Frank’s efforts against the homosexual policies of the American government.
The Pride Month pays homage to all those who took part in protests against a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. This month is marked by the LGBTQ+ community showcasing support for the cause from across the world.
