Sleep Apnea Symptoms: Risks, and Link to Obesity

Sleep apnea is a critical sleep disorder that causes interruptions in breathing while one is asleep. If left untreated, this condition leads to severe health conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, and even heart attack risks. This article delves into the inter-linkage between sleep apnea and obesity and introduces some symptoms together with preventive measures.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea. This is an interrupted breathing condition that occurs in the sleeping hours, caused by a blockage of the airways. This can sometimes lead to the reduction of oxygen in the body. Dr. Hemant Kumar explains, as in the video Health OPD, that sleep apnea makes it impossible for those individuals to manage their weight because the problem affects metabolism.

How Does Obese Sleep Apnea Result?

The relation between sleep apnea and obesity is cyclical. Sleep apnea results in unfavorable sleep patterns, which can then affect hormonal balance and increase hunger and appetite. Poor-quality sleep will increase the rate of metabolism, and consequently, it lowers the ability of the body to burn calories. Thus, sleep apnea contributes to obesity, which further aggravates the condition.

Dr. Hemant points out that the condition of obesity, which is now an orthodox lifestyle disease, worsens sleep apnea. Fat in the neck and the throat region blocks the airway, thereby making breathing difficult while sleeping.

- Early Manifestations of Sleep Apnea
-The high degree of daytime sleepiness.
-Loud snoring.
-Episodes of stopping breathing at night.
-Waking up with a gasp or choke.
-High blood pressure, memory problems, and weight gain.

Other Contributing Causes

In addition to obesity, there are other reasons why sleep apnea occurs. Alcoholism, stress, and lifestyle factors are also responsible. All these factors must be addressed seriously in order to deal with the problem properly.

Takeaway

More than a sleep disorder, sleep apnea is a condition that affects the health gravely. It is this early diagnosis and treatment along with lifestyle changes, such as effective weight management, that help break the cycle and improve the quality of life.
