Controversy in Greater Noida West Pollution Notice Issued Over Temple Bell, Withdrawn After Backlash

An unusual and surprising incident has emerged from Greater Noida West’s Gaur Saundaryam Society, where a notice was circulated to residents regarding the ringing of the temple bell. The issue escalated, leading to the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) eventually retracting the order.

The Background of the Incident

Within the Gaur Saundaryam Society, a temple is situated between the residential towers, where residents gather daily for worship. As part of their rituals, devotees ring the temple bell. However, some residents raised concerns about the noise generated by the bell, prompting a formal complaint to the UPPCB.

Temple Bell Noise Exceeds Limits

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the noise produced by the temple bell exceeded the prescribed limits. The bell generated noise levels of 70 decibels, whereas the acceptable limit is below 55 decibels. Following the findings, the UPPCB issued a notice to the Apartment Owners Association (AOA) of Gaur Saundaryam Society, requesting that residents ring the bell at a lower volume.

In response to the UPPCB notice, the AOA publicly circulated the request, urging residents to reduce the bell's volume. This action, however, sparked significant backlash from the local community. Many residents expressed their displeasure, questioning why the UPPCB was focusing on the temple bell while struggling to address more pressing pollution issues. They argued that the sound of the temple bell should not be classified as noise pollution.

Backlash and Retraction of the Order

The notice quickly went viral on social media, and the mounting criticism forced the UPPCB to reconsider its stance. By late Wednesday night, the UPPCB officially withdrew the notice, bowing to public pressure and the widespread discontent among residents.

This incident highlights the delicate balance between maintaining environmental standards and respecting cultural and religious practices, a challenge that continues to surface in urban settings like Greater Noida West.
