Geminid meteor shower 2020: How to watch the December meteor shower in India

Geminid meteor shower 2020: The Geminid meteor shower, which occurs between December 4 and December 17 every year, is currently active. They are considered the best annual meteor showers that light up the night sky and provide a spectacular view to skygazers.

Most meteor showers originate from comets, but the Geminids come from an asteroid: 3200 Phaethon. They travel at 35 km / s and more than 1000 times faster than a cheetah, around 250 times faster than the swiftest car in the world and more than 40 times faster than a speeding bullet.

About the Geminid meteor shower

NASA in its blog post explains that all meteors associated with a shower have similar orbits, and they all appear to come from the same place in the sky, which is called the radiant.

The Geminids appear to radiate from a point in the constellation Gemini. This is why they are called the “Geminids.”

How do watch the Geminids?

If you want to experience this spectacular phenomenon, find a location outside of the city or go to the terrace of your home, lie on your back to witness it comfortably. It can be difficult to see meteors for the first 30 minutes, but once your eyes get used to the darkness, you can manage to see them.

NASA says you shouldn’t look at your phone screen while looking at the sky as that will ruin your night vision.

Best time to spot Geminid meteor shower

The best time to spot Geminids is from midnight to 4 am on December 14. They can usually be seen all over the sky.

Don’t miss the spectacular event

If you can’t watch them for real due to any reason, you can watch a live stream of the Geminid meteor shower on the NASA Meteor Watch Facebook page.
