Jupiter closest to Earth in six decades: NASA shares tips to witness breathtaking views of night sky

Published Date:

Skygazers will get stunning views of Jupiter tonight as the giant planet will reach opposition, American Space Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said. The largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter is set to get closest to Earth since 1963 (after almost six decades) on September 26. This giant planet is approximately 600 million miles away from our planet Earth when it is at its farthest point.

How an opposition happens?

When an astronomical object rises in the east while the Sun sets in the west, the opposition happens from the viewpoint of Earth. This phenomenon places the object and the Sun opposite sides of the Earth, NASA said in a statement.

“Stargazers: Jupiter will make its closest approach to Earth in 59 years! Weather-permitting, expect excellent views on Sept. 26. A good pair of binoculars should be enough to catch some details; you’ll need a large telescope to see the Great Red Spot,” the American Space Agency tweeted.

Closest approach to Earth in six decades

Every 13 months, Jupiter seems larger and brighter compared to any other time of the year. However, this time, the massive planet will come closest to Earth in 59 years.

Reason behind the phenomenon

The reason behind this is the fact that Earth and Jupiter do not revolve around the Sun in perfect circles. It means that both the planets pass each other at different distances throughout the year.

Distance at its closest approach

Jupiter will be approximately 367 million miles in distance from Earth at its closest approach. This is almost the same distance it was in 1963.

NASA astrophysicist shares tips

A research astrophysicist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Adam Kobelski says one can view the banding and three or four of the Galilean satellites (moons) with good binoculars.

“It’s important to remember that Galileo observed these moons with 17th century optics. One of the key needs will be a stable mount for whatever system you use,” Kobelski said in an official statement posted by NASA.

“The views should be great for a few days before and after September 26. So, take advantage of good weather on either side of this date to take in the sight. Outside of the Moon, it should be one of the (if not the) brightest objects in the night sky,” Kolbelski said.
