Every year, scientists believe, the moon is drifting away from us. It is moving distinctly, farther from the planet earth. One can say it is about an inch and a half.
And there is no stopping that. Since the forces of gravity are invisible and natural. Hence, no human interference or attempt will ever be able to control this moving of the moon.
Basically, the moon was closer to us than yesteryears.
When it first formed, the moon orbited 10 times nearer to earth than it does today.
Earth and moon were always going to grow apart like this.
But the gravity of moons can still tug at their planets. This causes the larger worlds to bulge outward a little bit.
Moreover, we have ocean-covered planet earth, the effect of the moon moving away from our earth shows up in the shifting tides.
The moon pulls at our oceans, but those oceans pull back too. This makes the moon speed up in its orbit.
This phenomenon is known as a lunar retreat. Scientists have measured this retreat of the moon by beaming lasers at mirrors that the Apollo astronauts left on the moon.
It can be said that the rate of lunar retreat has shifted over the years.
The forces that draw the moon away from us are also slowing down the earth’s rotation.
In a nutshell, the moon will continue to drive this way. But the moon will remain bound to earth.
