The soil collected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Mars will become the most expensive substance known to humans if the American space agency successfully brings it back to the earth.

A total of 2 pounds of Martian soil would be brought back to the Earth throughout three missions. This Martian soil will be examined for the traces of ancient life on Red Planet.

According to the current cost, NASA would have to spend 200, 000 times the cost of two pounds of Gold to bring back the two pounds of Martian soil to the Earth.

The amount of soil the American space is planning to take to the Earth is less than a kilogram.

Reason behind the price of Martian soil

According to reports, the three missions will together cost around USD 9 billion. While the first mission will aim to examine and collect soil samples from the Red Planet, the second one is prepared to collect samples and pack the samples into the launcher.

After being loaded with the soil samples, the launcher will be launched into the orbit of the Red Planet. The objective of the third and last mission is to bring back the samples to the Earth.
