On Wednesday, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) revealed the central contracts for women’s cricketers for the 2020-21 season.
The contracts were given to a total of 19 cricketers, who were grouped into three categories: A, B, and C.
Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Poonam Yadav were among the top earners, each receiving Rs 50 lakh.
Players in category B earn Rs 30 lakh, while those in category C get Rs 10 lakh.
Men’s cricketers, on the other hand, are classified into four categories, with the top category earning Rs 7 crore and the C level earning Rs 1 crore.
While male Grade C players were given Rs 1 crore, female players can only earn Rs 50 lakhs, even if they are in Grade A. None of the women cricketers’ contract touch the crore mark.
It’s no surprise that the wage disparity between men’s and women’s cricketers is troubling. It’s not for the first time that fans have brought it up on social media.
Soon after the BCCI announced the list of contracted players, Twitterati expressed their dissatisfaction with the salary disparity, believing that women cricketers who represent the country ought to be paid equally.
