Captain Bumrah's Bold Move: Ashwin Over Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy to Make Test Debut in Perth
In a surprising twist for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah and head coach Gautam Gambhir are expected to make bold choices for the first Test against Australia in Perth. According to reports, Ravichandran Ashwin is set to be picked ahead of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar as India’s sole spinner in the playing XI. This decision is based on the presence of multiple left-handers in the Australian batting lineup, including Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, and Alex Carey, who may be vulnerable to Ashwin’s off-spin.
Unlike Australia, who are only bringing Nathan Lyon as a specialist spinner, India has a wealth of spin-bowling options. Traditionally, Jadeja has been India’s go-to spin-bowling all-rounder in overseas conditions, owing to his strong batting record. However, with the pitch at Perth expected to be a green top, India's strategy is shifting towards a more seam-heavy attack with Ashwin as the only spinner.
In addition, Nitish Kumar Reddy, the seam-bowling all-rounder from Andhra Pradesh, is set to make his Test debut. Reddy impressed during India's match simulation and is expected to strengthen the seam attack. His inclusion allows India to play three specialist fast bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep, alongside Ashwin. This combination will give India a well-rounded attack capable of exploiting the Australian conditions.
