Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are relishing their scintillating form as they reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday after beating Everton 0-2. Everton, the Premier League table topper, churned out a lackluster performance at Goodison Park which saw them out of the EFL Cup. Goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial sealed the win for the Red Devils. United will face their arch-nemesis Manchester City in the semi-final.
In a scrappy game, United wasted numerous opportunities in the opening half. Cavani started for the visitors after sitting out of 2 games in the EPL. He came close twice in the first half but failed to convert. A sluggish Everton attack was rejuvenated by Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Gylfi Sigurdsson when they came close to open the score but their plans were foiled by Dean Henderson on both occasions.
In the 88th minute, Cavani collected the ball on the right-wing, skipped inside onto his left foot, and fired past Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen. Martial added the second in the stoppage time to seal the game for United. The Red Devils are now unbeaten in 20 domestic games in all competitions, winning 18 of those.
Manager Ole Gunnar commented after the game, “It was cagey at times — there and back and flowing, attacking and defending but you’re always confident if it opens up a bit with the pace we have.”
“Cavani should’ve scored three in the first half but he is a top striker, movement, quality, and the goal was excellent.”
After a disappointing game, Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti said, “We did enough to win — good performance we needed to defend which we did well but more in the second half. We had a difficult start but after 20 minutes the game was under control — we didn’t play enough attacking football but we had to defend and until the last 20 minutes we did that well.”
