After helping Germany defeated Portugal on Saturday, Robin Gosens didn’t even bother to ask Cristiano Ronaldo for his shirt. The Atalanta striker was the hero with a man-of-the-match performance in their Euro 2020 encounter. Gosens shone as the left wing-back tormented Portugal, assisting with two goals and scoring one himself in Germany’s 4-2 romp to go 2nd in Group F.
After being taken off immediately after his goal, Gosens, who plays for Atalanta in Italy, earned a standing ovation from Germany’s supporters at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Producing a MOTM performance in front of Ronaldo must have been especially delicious for Gosens, who claimed in his memoirs in April that the famous striker left him “blushed and embarrassed” when he refused his shirt request.
Gosens’ horrible Serie A encounter
In his autobiography ‘Dreams are Worthwhile,’ the 26-year-old revealed, “After the game against Juventus, I tried to fulfil my dream of having Ronaldo jersey. After the final whistle I went to him, having not even gone public to celebrate … but Ronaldo did not accept. I asked: ‘Cristiano, can I have your shirt?’ He didn’t even look at me, he just said: ‘No!’”
“I was completely blushed and ashamed. I went away and felt small. You know that moment when something embarrassing happens and you look around to see if anyone noticed it? That’s what I felt and tried to hide it.”
Portugal 2-4 Germany
Gosens said that after getting burnt once, he didn’t ask Ronaldo for his Portugal shirt after Saturday’s Euro 2020 match.
After the match, Gosens said to Sky Sports Italia, “I didn’t ask him for his shirt, as I want to enjoy the victory and this evening. It is certainly an unforgettable night for me. We beat a truly strong team and I got my first goal in this tournament, as well as an assist. I am happy and proud.”
“We knew that we’d have to win today, because if we lost here then it’d become really difficult to qualify. We tried to give everything both in attack and defence. I’m happy we won the match.”
