On Wednesday, Pant’s efforts were amply rewarded when the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the new Test rankings.

Three Indian batters made the top ten: Virat Kohli (5th), Rishabh Pant (joint 6th with three other players), and Rohit Sharma (joint 6th with 3 players).

A wicket-keeper batsman has broken into the top 10 of the ICC Test rankings for batters for the first time in Indian cricket history.

Even the legendary MS Dhoni couldn’t do it.

The Jharkhand-born wicket-keeper batsman had a career-high of ICC World No. 19 in the longest format.

India’s tenacious wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and experienced opener Rohit Sharma have both risen a notch.

In the Test arena, Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma have consistently performed well for India

Though Rohit Sharma scored 345 runs (seven innings) in India’s last four Tests against England, Pant was not far behind with 270 runs (six innings).

On 747 points, the two are now tied for sixth place with Henry Nicholls of New Zealand.

With 224 runs at an average of 74.67 in the last Test series against Pakistan in January, Nicholls was New Zealand’s second-highest scorer.

No change in Top five

The table-toppers of the ICC Test batsmen rankings have remained unchanged.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, continues to overpower the other members of the ‘Fab 4’: Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Joe Root.

Williamson, who ascended to the top after scoring a century and a double century against Pakistan, has maintained his place with 919 points.

Smith (891), Marcus Labuschagne (878), Root (831) and Kohli are all behind him.

In early 2021, Kohli and Root faced off in a contrasting Test series.

Although the latter scored a brilliant double-hundred, the former’s hunt for his elusive international hundred went on.

Here’s the list of top 10 players in ICC test rankings.
