IND vs AUS: Cheteshwar Pujara Questions KL Rahul's Role as Opener - Read Now
Cheteshwar Pujara advises KL Rahul to bat at No. 3 instead of opening in the IND vs AUS Test series. He believes Rahul's experience under pressure suits the role. With Rahul’s recent struggles in form, the opener’s position remains a topic of debate for Team India.
The much awaited India vs Australia Test series is to begin on November 22 in Perth, and everything related to the batting order of Team India raises a debate. Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara, who is going to be commentating through this series, has raised his concerns on KL Rahul opening the innings.
Pujara Stresses the Need for Rahul to Open at No. 3
In an interview with CricNext, Pujara said that KL Rahul would be better suited to bat at No. 3 rather than opening. Here's why: "I have heard that Devdutt Padikkal might bat at No. 3 to balance the left-right combination. But in my opinion, KL Rahul would find it easier and more effective to bat at No. 3," said Pujara.
KL Rahul Recent Miscues as an Opener
Pujara's fears are further fueled by Rahul's recent performances in the practice matches against Australia A. Rahul could only score 4 and 10 in the two innings, giving rise to serious doubts over his form. The critics have criticized his place in the Test team, and another failed series may end with the loss of Rahul's place in the team.
Rohit Sharma's Absence Adds Fuel to the Fire
As Rohit Sharma won't be available regularly as the first-choice opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal might be asked to open with Rahul. However, Pujara feels that moving Rahul down the order would make their batting a better unit and enable him to get loose and play without much hindrance.
Dilemma for Team India
Opening with Rahul is a gamble, given his performances in Australian conditions and his questionable consistency in Tests. Rahul's future in the Test team may hang precariously in the balance.
Why No 3 will suit Rahul.
Pujara believes that batting at No. 3 would take some pressure off Rahul, helping the latter understand his game and build innings rather than worrying about facing the new ball again, which might prove to be crucial for Team India in the challenging conditions of Perth.
