India vs Australia: Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma to miss first two Tests

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has learned that Indian starlets Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma will not be a part of the first two Test matches against Australia in India’s upcoming tour down under. As per PTI, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has informed the apex cricket governing body that the duo will be ‘match fit’ in about a month’s time.

India kicks off their campaign in Australia with the limited over matches from Friday. Rohit and Ishant’s chances of taking part in the shorter formats were already over and now their inclusion in the last two Tests also became doubtful.

Going by Australia’s strict quarantine rules, it is uncertain whether the duo will be a part of the tour at all. Both the players are currently in rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru.

PTI quoted a BCCI source saying, “The NCA has given a report that both Rohit and Ishant will take at least another 3 to 4 weeks to get match fit.”

“Even if they travel now they will have ‘hard quarantine’ since they will travel by commercial flight. Hard quarantine means not being able to train during the 14 days like the whole team.”

“So, now if only Cricket Australia can convince the government and allow them to train during quarantine,” the source added.

On Sunday, head coach Ravi Shastri commented, “If you need to play in the Test series or any red-ball cricket, you’ve got to be on the flight in the next three or four days. If you aren’t, then it’s going to be tough.”

In absence of Rohit, chances are higher for young gun Shreyas Iyer to get a place in the Test squad.
