India vs England: India’s spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav struck in tandem to anchor India to an emphatic win in Chennai on Tuesday. The hosts won the second Test by 317 runs to level series 1-1. Axar got his maiden Test fifer and Ashwin scalped three to steamroll England’s batting line up. Ravichandran Ashwin’s eight-wicket haul and a hundred in the second Test of the four-match series brought India back into the series. The hosts registered their biggest win against England in a Test, and it is also India’s biggest win in Chennai. The loss broke England’s six Test wins on a trot.
India vs England, 2nd Test: Report
Coming out to bat with already three wickets down, the visitors had a mammoth task to save the Test. For India, Mohammad Siraj and Axar Patel opened the bowling. Joe Root and Dan Lawrence looked settled as they kept rotating strike.
It didn’t take long to get the first breakthrough of the day, with Ashwin coming into the attack. He sneaked one through Lawrence’s legs who came down the wicket to go for a slog hit but missed it. Rishabh Pant did the rest. And mayhem followed.
Axar Patel and Ashwin kept the England batters guessing as the tourists lost four wickets in the first session itself. Ben Stokes was dismissed by Ashwin as the former inside-edged a delivery which was caught at first slip.
Pope followed Stokes soon, as he swept Axar only to top edge an easy catch to Ishant at deep mid-wicket. Ben Foakes who batted well in the first innings, looked steady at first. Root finally found a steady partner in Foakes as the duo kept the bowlers at bay for some time.
However, Foakes was dismissed soon, when he swept Kuldeep’s ball only to find Axar at mid-wicket. England were 116/7 at early lunch. Root who looked settled on the wicket was the first to fall post-lunch.
A sharp turner from Axar took his glove and landed in the hands of Ajinkya Rahane. Moen Ali took on the spinners as he hit five sixes in his cameo of 43. Olly Stone was trapped by Axar in front of the wicket. Axar thus became the sixth Indian spinner to bag a fifer on debut.
Kuldeep picked up the last wicket as he dismissed Ali going for another slog hit but missing a wide delivery. Pant took the bails off and India registered their victory in Chennai. Ashwin was adjudged as the Man of the Match for his terrific effort with the ball and the bat.
