India wrapped up the 3rd Test match of the four-match series against England within two days at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. A comprehensive show with the ball by Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin, decimated England in both innings as India picked up the pink-ball Test victory by 10 wickets. The 2-1 lead means England is out of contention to qualify for the ICC Test Championship.
The day/night Test between India and England witnessed an astonishing turn of events as it got over in under six full sessions. Out of 30 wickets that fell on two days, 28 wickets belonged to the spinners.
Coming out to bat on the second day, India lost a heap of wickets in a jiffy. To be precise, India collapsed from 98/2 to 145/10, managing only a lead of 33 runs. Rohit Sharma was the leading run scorer of the lot with 66.
England captain Joe Root came into the attack after none of the pacers had anything on offer. Root’s introduction changed the complexion of the game drastically. The visiting skipper scalped five wickets giving away only 8 runs.
Jack Leach held the attack from the opposite end as he returned with four. India could add only 47 runs to their overnight score. However, England were caught off guard from the first ball of the second innings.
Axar Patel led the attack as he castled Zak Crawley’s stumps with his opening delivery of the spell. He then got Johnny Bairstow in his third delivery.
It didn’t take long for India’s spin to clean up England’s batting. The visitors were skittled out for 85, leaving India with a target of 49 runs to win. Ashwin reached yet another milestone as he bagged his 400th wicket in just 77 matches. Axar and Ashwin combined to take 9 wickets, Axar getting his third consecutive five-wicket haul.
Axar was named the player of the match for his 11-wicket haul. India has now climbed to the top spot in ICC Test Championship rankings. They need only a win or draw to enter the final.
