Virat Kohli’s Team India dominated England yet again, this time on a fresh pitch at Motera in Ahmedabad on Thursday. After all the ramblings on a ‘poor’ 3rd Test wicket, the visitors failed to execute their game plans on Day 1 of the final Test. England were skittled out for 205, as India ended the opening day on 24/1 at stumps.
India vs England, 4th Test: Report
The visitors, carrying their fresh scars from the pink-ball Test, were outplayed, but on a batting friendly pitch. Winnings the toss, Joe Root opted to bat first on a much greener Ahmedabad track. However, England failed to put pressure on India as Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin returned with 7 wickets.
The Indian spinners were rampant once again, as Axar got four wickets, Ashwin three and Washington Sundar returned with one. Mohammed Siraj who came in replacing Jasprit Bumrah, was impressive as he got the prized wickets of Root and Johnny Bairstow.
Root who expressed on the eve of the fourth Test that England should bat with more freedom, clearly has to be disappointed with their total of 205. Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley fell prey to Axar as England were reduced to 10/2.
Siraj bowled exceptionally well to trap Root in front of the wicket. He got Bairstow lbw as well. Both the batsmen were out after settling in. Stokes struck 55, Dan Lawrence 46 and Ollie Pope a cautious 29.
India got their breakthrough, as Ashwin, Axar and Sundar dismissed the three. The lower order couldn’t do much as Axar and Ashwin mopped up the tail quickly. There wasn’t much from Ben Foakes, Dominic Bess, Jack Leach and James Anderson.
James Anderson, struck on the third ball as he drew first blood during India’s innings. He had Shubman Gill lbw to a bail-trimmer. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara saw off the remaining day to take India to 24 for 1.
