India was eliminated from the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup after a crossover game here on Sunday ended in a 3-3 tie after regulation time and a 4-5 loss to lower-ranked New Zealand in a penalty shootout.
India, the sixth-ranked team in the world, put up a lacklustre performance that enabled New Zealand to tie the game after taking a 2-0 lead in the first half. Lalit Upadhyay (17th minute), Sukhjeet Singh (24th minute), and Varun Kumar scored goals for India (40th).
Sam Lane (who entered the game in the 28th minute) and two conversions from the penalty spot by Kane Russell (who entered the game in the 43rd minute) and Sean Findlay provided New Zealand’s response (49th).
