Indian men’s hockey team defeated Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match. This has put an end to a 41-year wait for an Olympic medal in hockey.
It was at the 1980 Moscow Games when India had won a medal in hockey. Last time it was a gold medal. And finally, India brought an end to the medal drought. Defeating Germany, India has won the bronze medal in a thrilling comeback win.
Simranjeet Singh scored a brace for Indian men’s hockey team. Hardik Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh have also got their names on the scoresheet for India.
However, Germany had taken an early lead with Timur Oruz scoring in the second minute of the first quarter.

But it was Simranjeet Singh who scored in the 17th minute drawing India level at 1-1. Germany sooner came roaring back and scored two more goals in the second quarter to lead 3-1.
But Hardik Singh too succeeded in pulling a goal back for India to make 2-3. Harmanpreet Singh also put India on level terms at the end of the second quarter for Indian men’s hockey team.
Moreover, it was the third quarter that proved to be the most fruitful for Manpreet Singh’s side. Rupinder Pal Singh too made a giant leap with his penalty stroke giving India a 4-3 lead.
The player’s energy bore fruits when Simranjeet Singh scored his second goal of the match to give India a 5-3 lead, going into the final quarter. It is a big win for the country and Indian men’s hockey team after over four decades.
On the whole, Germany also played well. But no doubt the medal was waiting for India.
